Schoenhut Dolls: A Collector's Encyclopedia
Published in Hardcover by Hobby House Pr (1993)
Author: Carol Corson
Average review score:

I highly recommend this book to every Schoenhut collector
I have a large web site celebrating carved dolls with several web pages about Schoenhut dolls. I use this book as my main reference for Schoenhut dolls.

I love this book. Carol's method of presenting the dolls by Schoenhut model numbers has changed the way modern doll collectors refer to these dolls. Now a collector might state, "I have a 316 in mint condition". Thanks to Carol, others will be able to picture her doll clearly in our mind.

Carol's stories about the Schoenhut family members and each of their very active involvement with the toy company puts a very personal slant on the history of this family oriented company. It should be obvious from this book that the Schoenhut family took great pride in producing the best quality, durable dolls and toys because they loved children and enjoyed the great fun of watching children at play.

If you collect Schoenhut dolls, then you really NEED this book -- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

A Must-Have Book for any Schoenhut Collector!
I just love this book. If you collect Schoenhut dolls (or just one) you need this book. Beautiful photos of rare dolls, in depth history of the company, descriptions and examples of the the different models.... just a joy to read and look at.

The Secrets of Superselling: How to Program Your Subconscious for Success
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (April, 1991)
Authors: Lynea Corson, George Hadley, and Carl Stevens
Average review score:

It works if you put it into practice.
This is a fantastic book with clear and easy to apply principles. I've read the book and only just started to apply the secrets, I have started to see results already. I've closed more contracts in the last two months than I closed in the six months prior. My collegues have noticed the positive energy I emit and I've received positive results from just using what has been written. Just buy the book and use it. It really works. Too many times people read a book such as this or go to a seminar but they never apply what they learn. If you try it, it will work.

Combine this with Tapes for the Best Results
I have not yet read this book, but I have attended Lynea's workshop and have once again begun listening to the tapes (which include all the information found in the book) on a daily basis, and I must say, that combined with guided visualization and WORK - it is one of the most effective tools I have found to keep me on track in both my business and personal life! ..... And it WORKS!

Consequences of Failure
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1974)
Authors: William R. Corson and William R. Carson
Average review score:

One of the finest military minds in America
Lieutenant-Colonel William R. Corson USMC (Retired) is without a doubt one of the finest and most respected military minds in the nation. Colonel Corson passed away a few years ago but this book is a living testimony to his military genius. A combat Marine in World War II, Korea and Vietnam...the author also had a B.B.A, M.A.,and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago and the American University.

Colonel Corson has written a devastating book. In it he carefully explains how mismanagement, self-deception and corruption caused the failure of the American military effort in Vietnam. Before retiring from the Marine Corps, the author worked with both senior Pentagon officials and top White House advisors. This well-written and insightful book is an honest appraisal of a complicated subject by a special Marine officer with great vision.

The New KGB: Engine of Soviet Power
Published in Paperback by William Morrow (September, 1986)
Authors: Robert Crowley and William R. Corson

The best book ever written on the KGB
I occasionally teach Soviet KGB History. I tell my students that I am pretty much a poor substitute for this book, and I make them read it.

There is no better book on KGB history.

Shopping for a Better World: A Quick and Easy Guide to Socially Responsible Supermarket Shopping

Fantastic!
This book is a MUST for anyone who wants to know what their money actually supports! After reading this book, I stopped supporting companies that were abusive towards animals or irresponsible in other ways and I switched to products from companies with a clear track record. I highly recommend this book.

Stage Makeup
Published in Hardcover by Smithmark Publishing (April, 1983)
Author: Richard Corson
Average review score:

New, but not improved.
While this book remains a "bible" in its field, my students complain about the price and the lack of color demonstrations. I was hoping the Ninth Edition of this book would have more color photos spread throughout the chapters, but the format has remained very much the same, with many of the same demonstrations and photo descriptions. The new chapters for film and television are a breath of fresh air and I applaud the new techniques aditions.

A Film-Maker's Dream
I am a film-maker out of Ohio. I used to use Tom Savini's Bizarro, Grande Illusions 1, Grande Illusions 2, and Dick Smith's Do-It-Yourself guides....BUT, after meeting Tom Savini and learning that he considers this book his "bible", I checked it out for myself. WOW! This is the book to get for anyone interested in stage make-up or special effects makeup. It IS a little pricey, but for the information and detail, it cannot be beat. I consider this a companion to the ones listed above. Get em all if you can, but make sure you OWN this one!!!!!

Meridith
This is the bible of stage make-up. It has wonderful step-by-step pictures so you see the process. I loved the fact that there was no flowery language to complicate learning. It caters to the beginner and the professional. If you are serious about learning the trade, this is the investment to make. This was a recommended book for me in college and it helped give me an edge over my classmates. If you don't know where to start, or would like to brush up on your technique, this is a great resource.

Too High
Published in Hardcover by Forge (September, 2001)
Author: Corson Hirschfeld
Average review score:

Goofy Book is Hard To Put Down
I'll admit that I picked this book up when the author was compared to Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiasan. Sounded like a good combination of suspenseful crime fiction added with Southern Humor.

This book which features a number of memorable characters including Digger Fitz and a fundamentalist milita member Jesus-Bob is alternately suspenseful, funny and a profound observer of southern culture (although the story is based in Kentucky which is on the cusp of being southern.) The basic plot of the story is the unraveling of a murder of a family member of Digger Fitz. In unraveling that mystery, the story takes all kinds of twists that include early American History and the militia movement in this country. Although the story is a farce, I credit the author for writing a book that is much deeper than just its comedy.

In addition to the previous comparisons with Elmore Leonard, etc., another comparison could be made to Harry Crews. However, unlike Crews' work there is a positive optimism in this book. Yes, there are plenty of scummy characters in this book, but there are also some good ones that will put a warm smile on your face and give the book redeeming value.

It's not a classic but it's worth reading.

Wild ride through the hills of eastern Kentucky
This is a great book that blends accurate accounts of the French and Indian war and Kentucky snake hunting with the outrageous antics of a fictional Kentucky militia. I could not put this book down! If you love archaeology, herpetology, history or just enjoy a good laugh, I recommend this book. It was more fun than road crusin' McCreary county on a rainy night in June lookin' for Spadefoots.

Its a damn funny book
This is a book full of high-level hilarity, with many interwoven themes that you cannot put it down for fear of losing one of the threads. Hirschfeld has done another masterful job, and I look forward to his third effort. A note for Mr. Clark (one of the earlier "reviewers" of this book). Authors don't draw their front covers, and they have no say in the design. The fanciful snake on the front cover is just that -- fanciful, and is unrelated to the intellectual content of this fine volume. Also, "antivenom" has completely overriden the almost unknown scientific term, "antivenin," in common usage in the United States. Had Hirschfeld used antivenin in his book, it would have been misunderstood by most of the public, and laughed at by academic herpetologists. He did it just right. In fact, he did the entire book right. It is herpetologically one of the most accurate books of fiction ever written.

Domitia and Domitian
Published in Paperback by Writer's Showcase Press (August, 2000)
Author: David Corson
Average review score:

A well researched, big, sprawling novel
Based on new research (B.W. Jones, P. Southern) rehabilitating the Emperor Domitian, David Corson presents a sympathetic image of the emperor, who succumbs to "melancholy" in later years.

Mr. Corson creates a big, sprawling novel on the lives and times of Domitian and his empress Domitia, daughter of Corbulo, one of Nero's last victims.

The meticulously researched book keeps the reader's interest despite the known outcome and the length of the work.

I highly recommend it to historical fiction buffs!

Speculum Genii Romae Est
Unlike other biographies of Roman emperors, this sympathetic story focusses on the Emperess just as much as her husband. 'Domitia & Domitian' is an awesome description of the Flavian dynasty, vastly educational and socially comprehensive. Considering the dearth of sources from this period Corson has created a world that is not only compelling but based on historical fact as much as possible. A long and enjoyable read that will stir any reader with pathos. 'Domitia & Domitian' revives many themes that are strikingly relevant to today's society, while contrasting them with some themes that are happily now lost. Enjoy it.

A Fabulous Historical Novel
I affirm the praise of the reviews written before mine. David Corson knows the period and the people about whom he is writing. Having written articles about this imperial couple it is refreshing to encounter an author writing on this period who does his research. The characters of this book are well drawn and are presented to us in a place and time that is a real environment. Each chapter is broken into short episodes as long as two pages. The story advances from what is happening in Domitian's world to the world of Domitia. As the book progresses, the reader finds events reflected from the perspectives of Domitian and Domitia. We know so little about Domitia that it is gratifying to find her life (albeit fiction) filled out so she becomes a real person.

In short, this book will be a revelation for anyone interested in Roman history. It is well written and a joy to read.

Aloha, Mr. Lucky
Published in Paperback by Forge (August, 2001)
Author: Corson Hirschfeld
Average review score:

Great mystery and adventure in Hawaii!
I read this book on a trip to Hawaii so I particularly enjoyed the detailed stories of Hawaiian myth. In additon, Hirschfeld creates unique characters, introduced one by one, whose lives come together in a bizarre adventure of good guy, bad guy, and treasures sought. I laughed a lot, held my breath, and learned a few things from this wonderful debut novel. Who knew I could find two of my favorite things (comedy and suspense) in one book!

Aloha Corson Hirschfeld !
What a first novel ! This well conceived story never lets you down and makes for quick enjoyable read. Corson brings to life the language and flavor of Hawaii that only a devotee could bring to the forefront. His characters are as real as they are compelling. You will be left intrigued by the past of this island paradise that clearly has more to teach us about its culture, archaeology and its flora and fauna. Corson weaves a wonderful yarn. Best read on the beach or headed there. You will learn a lot about the culture and ethnology of Hawaii by reading this book.

leave 'em laughing
This is one of the best capers I've ever read. I laughed for pages at a time. The prose is so polished, the plot so tight, and the characters so well limned that I found it difficult to believe that it is a first novel. Comparisons are inevitable, so I will skip them (although, hint: what writer has the same initials?). One thing that set this book apart was that there is a great deal of Hawaiian mythology and natural history woven through it, and I learned quite a bit. Enjoy!
